Combining User Modeling and Machine Learning to Predict Users' Multimodal Integration Patterns

چکیده
Temporal as well as semantic constraints on fusion are at the heart of multimodal system processing. The goal of the present work is to develop useradaptive temporal thresholds with improved performance characteristics over state-of-the-art fixed ones, which can be accomplished by leveraging both empirical user modeling and machine learning techniques to handle the large individual differences in users’ multimodal integration patterns. Using simple Naïve Bayes learning methods and a leave-one-out training strategy, our model correctly predicted 88% of users’ mixed speech and pen signal input as either unimodal or multimodal, and 91% of their multimodal input as either sequentially or simultaneously integrated. In addition to predicting a user’s multimodal pattern in advance of receiving input, predictive accuracies also were evaluated after the first signal’s end-point detection─the earliest time when a speech/pen multimodal system makes a decision regarding fusion. This system-centered metric yielded accuracies of 90% and 92%, respectively, for classification of unimodal/multimodal and sequential/simultaneous input patterns. In addition, empirical modeling revealed a .92 correlation between users’ multimodal integration pattern and their likelihood of interacting multimodally, which may have accounted for the superior learning obtained with training over heterogeneous user data rather than data partitioned by user subtype. Finally, in large part due to guidance from user-modeling, the techniques reported here required as little as 15 samples to predict a “surprise” user’s input patterns.

Toward Adaptive Information Fusion in Multimodal Systems
Techniques for information fusion are at the heart of multimodal system design. To develop new user-adaptive approaches for multimodal fusion, our lab has investigated the stability and basis of major individual differences that have been documented in users’ multimodal integration patterns. In this talk, I summarized the following: (1) there are large individual differences in users’ dominant ...
متن کاملTrust Classification in Social Networks Using Combined Machine Learning Algorithms and Fuzzy Logic
Social networks have become the main infrastructure of today’s daily activities of people during the last decade. In these networks, users interact with each other, share their interests on resources and present their opinions about these resources or spread their information. Since each user has a limited knowledge of other users and most of them are anonymous, the trust factor plays an import...
متن کاملMultimodal integration patterns in children
Multimodal interfaces are designed with a focus on flexibility, although very few multimodal systems currently are capable of adapting to major sources of user or environmental variation. The development of adaptive multimodal processing techniques will require empirical guidance on modeling key aspects of individual differences. In the present study, we collected data from 24 7-to-10-year-old ...
متن کاملHybrid Recommender System Based on Variance Item Rating
K-nearest neighbors (KNN) based recommender systems (KRS) are among the most successful recent available recommender systems. These methods involve in predicting the rating of an item based on the mean of ratings given to similar items, with the similarity defined by considering the mean rating given to each item as its feature. This paper presents a KRS developed by combining the following app...
متن کاملModeling different decision strategies in a time tabled multimodal route planning by integrating the quantifier-guided OWA operators, fuzzy AHP weighting method and TOPSIS
The purpose of Multi-modal Multi-criteria Personalized Route Planning (MMPRP) is to provide an optimal route between an origin-destination pair by considering weights of effective criteria in a way this route can be a combination of public and private modes of transportation. In this paper, the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (fuzzy AHP) and the quantifier-guided ordered weighted averaging (...
